South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, along with leaders from several African countries, has arrived in Ukraine in an effort to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia. The African delegation, comprising representatives from South Africa, Senegal, the Comoros, and Egypt, aims to play a mediating role between Ukraine and Russia.
As the African delegation embarked on their peace mission, Kyiv was rocked by two explosions, prompting air raid sirens to blare throughout the city. The precise origin of the missiles remains unclear, with reports suggesting they may have been launched by either Russia or Ukrainian air defenses. Mayor Vitali Klitschko issued a warning, stating that additional missiles were en route to the capital.
Despite the unsettling turn of events, the African leaders arrived in Kyiv as planned and sought refuge in a hotel equipped with an air-raid shelter. The delegation’s itinerary included a visit to Bucha, near Kyiv, where Ukrainian authorities claim Russian troops committed large-scale atrocities following their invasion in February 2022. Russia, however, denies these allegations.
According to a draft framework document seen by Reuters, the African peace mission aims to propose several “confidence-building measures” during the initial stages of mediation. These measures might involve a Russian troop pullback, the removal of tactical nuclear weapons from Belarus, suspension of the implementation of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the easing of sanctions.
The ultimate objective of the mission is to promote peace and encourage both parties to engage in a negotiation process led by diplomacy. The document suggests that a cessation of hostilities agreement could follow, necessitating negotiations between Russia and Western nations.
The peace mission coincides with a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has pushed Russian forces back in certain areas, albeit with Kyiv having only reclaimed a small portion of the territory occupied by Russian forces in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government maintains that its peace initiative, which involves the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian soil, should form the basis for any resolution to the conflict
