Introduction:
A recent investigation by Nehanda Radio has uncovered disturbing activities in Zimbabwe’s Chiadzwa diamond and gold fields. The people responsible for guarding these valuable resources, including soldiers and police officers, are reportedly involved in large-scale looting and smuggling of precious stones. This revelation raises serious concerns about the integrity of the security forces and the protection of Zimbabwe’s valuable mineral resources.
Discovery and Controversial Deployment:
In 2006, diamonds were discovered in Chiadzwa, leading to the displacement of over 35,000 people from the area. However, in 2008, the situation took a troubling turn when the government deployed the military in an operation called Operation Hakudzokwi. Shockingly, it is believed that more than 200 illegal miners were killed by the military and buried in mass graves.
Collusion and Smuggling:
A recent survey found that security officers assigned to Chiadzwa were working together with illegal gold and diamond miners and traders. They were enabling their illegal activities and helping them smuggle the precious minerals out of the country. The minerals are often sent to South Africa or Mozambique before reaching Dubai.
Complicity of Law Enforcement:
Law enforcement agencies responsible for securing the minerals were discovered to be involved in illicit activities. Some officers colluded with illegal miners and traders, allowing them to operate freely. Shockingly, state security agents were caught allowing illegal miners and buyers access to restricted diamond zones in exchange for bribes. Additionally, some security personnel had illegal miners work on their behalf, with the gold they produced never entering official channels.
Challenges Faced:
The investigation revealed several challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in their fight against mineral smuggling. They lack proper tools, suitable vehicles for patrolling, fair pay, and public support, which hampers their effectiveness.
Displaced Families and Broken Promises:
Around 1,500 families were forcibly relocated from Chiadzwa to Arda Transau in 2009. However, the houses provided for them were of poor quality and now pose risks to the community. Despite promises, mining companies have failed to fulfill their commitment to rehabilitate the houses and support the affected families.
