This morning, the leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change, Nelson Chamisa, made a visit to his polling station in Kuwadzana to personally verify the accuracy of his details in the voters’ roll. Following confirmation that his name was correctly listed, Mr Chamisa spoke to journalists to express his concerns regarding the unconstitutional interference of FAZ, an affiliate of the ruling party ZANU PF, in the voters’ roll inspection process across Zimbabwe. FAZ members were reportedly soliciting citizens’ personal information and positioning themselves inside and outside polling stations.
During the conversation with journalists, Mr. Chamisa urged all citizens to take the opportunity to inspect the voters’ roll. He emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency and fairness in the electoral process, calling for an end to any interference that may compromise the integrity of the upcoming elections.
When asked about Mr Mnangagwa’s delay in announcing the election date, with less than three months remaining, Mr. Chamisa criticized the lack of clarity on the matter. He accused Mr Mnangagwa of “ducking and diving” on the issue, asserting that such uncertainty hindered the ability of individuals, political parties, and the international community to adequately prepare for the election. The absence of a proclaimed date jeopardized planning efforts across the board.
As word spread about Mr. Chamisa’s presence in the area, he was mobbed by his enthusiastic supporters. The atmosphere resembled that of his political rallies, with supporters singing songs expressing their belief that he would rescue them from the hardships endured under the Mnangagwa-led regime. The country continues to grapple with high inflation and the devaluation of the Zimbabwe dollar, despite the implementation of new policies.
Mr Nelson Chamisa’s visit to the polling station served as a reminder of the importance of actively participating in the electoral process. His concerns about voter roll interference and the delay in announcing the election date highlight the need for transparency and efficient planning to ensure a fair and credible election in Zimbabwe.
