The close-knit community of Masvingo Urban was left in shock and grief today as they mourned the untimely passing of Mr. Prosper Chingoziva Chuma. He was a well-known barber and entrepreneur, passed away at Masvingo General Hospital in the early hours of this morning.
Survived by his dedicated wife, who tirelessly works in the Central Service Department at Great Zimbabwe University, and their four children, mourners have already gathered at House Number 2445 / 28 Mushandike Street, Majange, the Chuma residence near Majange Shopping Center in Majange suburb, Masvingo Urban. Elder Sylvester Tumburai, a close friend of the family, expressed that burial arrangements will be communicated at a later date, allowing friends and well-wishers to pay their final respects.
Mr. Chuma was admitted to the hospital on May 6th, 2024, due to complications arising from malaria. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, his health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his untimely demise.
Masvingo urban member of parliament and renowned human rights lawyer Advocate Martin Mureri mourned the passing away of Mr Chuma. He said, “I am devasted by the death of Mr Chuma after short illness. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family in this difficult moment.”
Known for his exceptional skill and dedication, Mr. Chuma operated his bustling barbershop at Chevron Hotel in Masvingo. His clientele included prominent figures within the community such former Masvingo urban member of parliament honourable Jacob Nyokanhete, Masvingo Family Planning head of information and publicity Mr Chikosi, Masvingo Cemtral member of parliament Edson Zvobgo Junior, Apostle Charles Josiya, Rev. Manzonzo among others, establishing himself as the go-to barber for those seeking top-notch grooming services. Mr. Farai Manyudza, affectionately known as “Doctor,” who worked alongside Mr. Chuma at Chevron Hotel, expressed profound devastation at the loss: “We are utterly devastated by the passing of Mr. Prosper Chuma. He was not only a talented barber but also a loving and hardworking man. The Masvingo business community has suffered a great loss.”
The news of Mr. Chuma’s passing reverberated throughout the community, especially within Masvingo Alliance Church, located near Great Zimbabwe University’s Mucheke campus. As an esteemed church elder and dedicated usher, Mr. Chuma’s presence and contributions were deeply cherished. Apostle Charles Josiya, the senior pastor of Masvingo Alliance Church, lamented the loss: “The Alliance Church in Masvingo and Zimbabwe as a whole mourns the departure of a dear son, elder, and dedicated church member. Mr. Chuma’s unwavering commitment as a member of our church decoration team and his kind-hearted spirit will be sorely missed. May his soul find eternal peace. Our prayers are with his grieving family, his wife, and children. May God provide them comfort during this difficult time.”
Beyond his barbering prowess, Mr. Chuma was a renowned fitness enthusiast and the owner of Prosper Fitness Gym. He trained notable individuals, including Zimbabwe’s popular boxer, Mr. Charles Manyuchi. His passion for sports was further showcased through his unwavering support for the local football team, Masvingo United.
In addition to his impressive portfolio, Mr. Chuma also collaborated with the esteemed car import company, Acolyte Car Solution. Mr. Shalton Nyandoro, the director of Acolyte Car Solution, expressed his condolences, stating, “The staff and management of Acolyte Car Solution extend our deepest sympathies to the Chuma family on the loss of our hardworking and dependable team member, Mr. Prosper Chuma. His dedication and reliability were invaluable assets to our company. May he rest in eternal peace. To Amai Chuma and the children, may God provide solace in this challenging time.”
Mr. Chuma’s entrepreneurial endeavors extended beyond the barbershop and fitness gym. He had also made a name for himself as a successful car importer, sourcing vehicles from Tanzania and South Africa for his clients. His commitment to delivering quality service and ensuring customer satisfaction established him as a trusted figure within the automotive industry.
Sherry Nyashanu, a former top model based in Masvingo and former Ndarama High School student, expressed her shock at Mr. Chuma’s passing: “I was shocked by the news of Mr. Chuma’s death. He was my brother and coworker, and he was such a humble and ever-smiling man with a lot of respect. The news of his death is heart-breaking. My deepest condolences to the family and the community at large.”
As news of Prosper Chuma’s passing spreads throughout Masvingo Urban, friends, family, and acquaintances remember him not only as a skilled barber, but as a loving husband, father, community leader, and an irreplaceable pillar of the community. His departure leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all those whose lives he touched. May his legacy continue to inspire others, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.
