The Zimbabwe Election Commission’s stratospheric increases in candidate nomination costs and the expense of accessing electoral information have prompted a local civic group to petition parliament, claiming that these actions violate constitutional rights and prejudice women in particular.
In an oral presentation before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs, the group criticized a petition they had submitted to parliament the previous year over candidate nomination costs and the expense of election information, particularly maps.
Kudakwashe Munemo, Vongai Zimudzi, and Merjury Mhlanga are the people behind the presentation. Vongai Zimudzi is a possible candidate for the general elections in 2023.
”The fees are exorbitant and excludes women and PWDs, a development which this grossly violates section 56 of the constitution which enshrines the right to equality and non-discrimination and defeats the 2030 Agenda of Leaving Noone Behind,” they said
”These astronomical nurture of the fees hinder access to information rights, this violates section 62 of the constitution.They further widen existing inequalities and can encourage corruption or yield captured leaders. “
