As the Zimbabwean economy continues to face challenges due to poor economic policies, corruption, and incompetence, Dr. Felix Mafa Sibanda, the Deputy National Spokesperson of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has offered his perspective. Dr Mafa Sibanda suggests that winning the war of liberation in 1980, as ZANU PF and other Miliyants did, does not automatically ensure their success in effectively managing the economy.
In a brief statement, Mafa Sibanda highlights that “history worldwide has shown that successfully leading a liberation movement driven by ideology does not always guarantee effective governance of a democratic nation. However, historical evidence suggests that governments arising from citizen-based democratic movements tend to perform well. This is because such movements derive their legitimacy and authority from the citizens they represent. Citizen-based movements are primarily guided by democratic principles and practices rather than rigid ideologies, which can lead to the rise of autocratic governments.”
Dr Mafa Sibanda’s perspective can be underscored as the need for Zimbabwe to adopt a citizen-centric and democratic approach to governance. It highlights the importance of prioritizing the collective voice and will of the people over outdated ideological constructs. By embracing democratic values, Zimbabwe can establish a government that is transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of its citizens.
