Five University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students who were arrested last week for holding demonstrations in the capital were back in court yesterday. The five were arrested following Black Monday demonstrations demanding the release of political prisoners, Hon. Job Sikhala and Jacob Ngarivhume.
Commenting on this issue, Zimbabwe National Students Union spokesperson Lennon Mazuru said the court postponed the bail hearing after spending the whole day changing court rooms and delaying.
“The court has postponed the matter of five UZ students who have been arrested and are accused of malicious damage of property.” Muzuru said.
He went on to say, “It is clear to the courts and everyone else that there’s no matter at all against the accused five.”
The bail hearing was supposed to start at 8 a.m., but because of various funny reasons, including the changing of court rooms, one of the witnesses was not there on time, and the magistrate also came late.
The postponement was finally pronounced at 17:00 hrs.
The bail hearing was postponed to Monday, May 29, 2023.
The accused five are Benjamin Watadza, Emmanuel Sitima, Comfort Mpofu, Lionel Madamombe, and Darlington Chigwena.
