In a stark display of the ongoing economic crisis in Zimbabwe, journalists employed by privately-owned Alpha Media House (AMH) have voiced their concerns about their inability to work effectively due to severely eroded salaries. Blaming the economic downturn on corruption and incompetence within the ruling ZANU-PF government, the journalists have cited difficulties in providing for their families and meeting basic expenses.
The journalists’ grievances were conveyed through a letter shared on social media platforms, where they expressed their commitment to working diligently despite the challenging economic environment. However, they emphasized that the current situation has reached a breaking point, leaving them struggling to make ends meet.
This development comes shortly after a similar letter penned by employees of the government-owned media company, Zimpapers, who also requested their salaries to be pegged in US dollars, citing incapacitation. The collective outcry from journalists across different media outlets underscores the severity of the crisis faced by the industry.
Expressing solidarity with their colleagues at AMH, the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, the representative body for journalists in the country, released a statement on Twitter acknowledging the notice of incapacitation received from AMH employees. The union highlighted the dire circumstances faced by journalists, who are burdened by meager salaries and dehumanizing wages.
The union further emphasized that the prevailing low salaries across the media industry have become an existential threat, jeopardizing the quality of journalism in Zimbabwe. They urged employers to demonstrate sensitivity and ensure dignified remuneration for journalists. According to the union’s recommendations, junior reporters should receive a monthly salary of USD 550, while senior reporters should earn ZWL 260,000 and junior reporters ZWL 255,000 within AMH.
The union’s declaration of incapacitation by AMH journalists serves as a powerful testament to their mounting frustrations. They highlight the urgent need for fair compensation and demand an end to the suffocating financial circumstances that are hindering their ability to fulfill their professional duties.
As the economic crisis continues to plague Zimbabwe, it is crucial for both media organizations and the government to address the challenges faced by journalists. Sustainable solutions must be implemented to ensure the survival of a vibrant and independent media landscape, allowing journalists to fulfill their vital role in providing accurate and timely information to the public.
