Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has called on Torerai Moyo to publicly retract statements uttered on October 10 2025, which allegedly undermined the union’s reputation among teachers and stakeholders. In a letter signed by the ARTUZ President, Obert Masaraure, the union has given Torerai Mogo a clear directive to publicly withdraw statements he made, citing harm to the union’s integrity.

Below is Masaraure’s letter addressed to: Dr. Torerai Moyo

Dear Sir,

RE: LETTER DEMANDING RETRACTION OF FALSE STATEMENTS AGAINST AMALGAMATED RURAL TEACHERS UNION OF ZIMAMBWE (ARTUZ)

1. We adress you in response to your public speech that you gave on 10 October in Gwanda against ARTUZ. Kindly note our brief and professional interest herein.

2. Your statements specifically and by innuendo alleged the following:

a) That we are funded by an opposition political party

b) That we have less than one hundred (100) members

3. The statements you made were with utter recklessness and disregard of the truth. As a public servant who took an oath to uphold the laws of Zimbabwe, and demean yourself, you are duty bound all the time to ensure that your public statements are accurate and not unjustly injurious to our organisation and/others.

4. These allegations were spoken in front of a large audience of about 3 000 on 10 October 2025, and subsequently continues to circulate around different social media platforms, widening the audience.

5. By alleging that we are politically funded you impute that ARTUZ is not non-partisan and does not seek to engage policy makers to address the struggle of teachers.

6. It is difficult to fathom why you would cherry pick our organisation from the pool of teachers’ organisations in the country to hurl your allegations at.

7. You owe a perpetual duty to the community. You failed to verify the veracity of the allegations you made against our organisation and the same constitutes a deliberate and/or negligent violation of our organisation’s rights that are constitutionally entrenched by the laws of the land. You have thus by your nefarious conduct impugned directly and by insinuation our organisation’s standing.

8. As already alluded, your reckless statements and/or allegations directly infringed our organisation’s rights and good name and we hold a firm brief and mandate to assert these rights through judicial processes and remedies, should it become necessary.

9. We hereby demand that you comply with the following within 72 hours of receipt of this letter:

a) PUBLIC APOLOGY: You shall issue a sincere, profuse and unconditional public apology to our organisation, acknowledging the harm caused by your nefarious allegations. The apology must be both in print and digital media. For avoidance of doubt, you shall cause an apology to be published in one of the most circulating newspapers in this country.

b) RETRACTION: You shall unconditionally retract the statements you made by stating the following: ‘I do hereby retract unconditionally, the statements I made regards to Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) wherein I tainted it.’

10. We trust that you will find the above to be in order and proceed to do the needful if you so desire.
