Prof. Tyanai Masiya, a top lieutenant of President Nelson Chamisa in South Africa, has recently been awarded a prestigious C3 rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa. This recognition is a testament to his expertise and outstanding contributions to research in the field of public administration in South Africa and Africa as a whole.
Prof. Masiya is a Professor of Public Administration at the one of the top Universities in Africa and the World, University of Pretoria, where he has been a faculty member since 2014. Prior to his current role, he held various positions, including serving as a Committee Clerk at the Parliament of Zimbabwe, where he provided research and administrative support to members of parliament. He also worked as a Technical Assistant to the late Prof. Rukudzo Murapa, the former Vice Chancellor of the African University, and as a Lecturer at Midlands State University in Zimbabwe. Additionally, he has experience as a Research Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa.
Prof. Masiya’s research output is truly impressive. He has published thirty-three articles in internationally accredited journals, including those listed on the ABDC, Web of Science, Scopus, DOAJ, IBSS, and DHET lists. Furthermore, he has authored fourteen book chapters and edited two books, demonstrating his versatility and breadth of knowledge in the field of public administration.
In recognition of the quality of his research, Prof. Masiya has received several prestigious awards, including the IASIA Pierre DeCelles Award for the best conference paper in 2022, the ASSADPAM best conference paper award in 2022, and a nomination as one of the Top Emerging Researchers in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria for his research output in 2021.
Prof. Masiya’s research capacity has been further strengthened through his involvement in interdisciplinary collaborative research projects, which have taken him on research exchange visits to various universities, such as Trinity in the USA, Kehl in Germany, Coventry in England, and several African countries. This experience has undoubtedly enriched his research and broadened his perspectives.
Moreover, Prof. Masiya has presented his work at numerous top international conferences, including the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA), the African Association of Public Administration and Management (AAPAM), the International Public Policy Association (IPPA), and the Association of Southern African Schools and Departments of Public Administration and Management (ASSADPAM). These platforms have provided him with the opportunity to share his insights and receive valuable feedback from his peers in the field.
Alongside his research activities, Prof. Masiya has also made significant contributions to the academic community by mentoring postdoctoral students and supervising over fifty students at the honors, master’s, and doctoral levels. This dedication to nurturing the next generation of scholars is a commendable aspect of his career.
Prof. Masiya holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pretoria, a Master of Public Administration Degree, and a BSc Hons in Politics and Administration from the University of Zimbabwe. His academic credentials and diverse experience have undoubtedly contributed to his research excellence and recognition.
The University of Pretoria and the broader academic community are proud to have Prof. Masiya as a member of their faculty. His continued success and groundbreaking public administration research are eagerly anticipated, and he is poised to make an even greater impact in the field in the years to come.
In politics, Prof. Masiya has held various positions in the opposition movement since its formation as the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in 1999 under the able leadership of the late President Morgan Richard Tsvangirai. From an ordinary member, he became a branch chair, a district treasurer, a district chair, and a provincial executive committee member responsible for International Relations.
In the 2018 general elections, under the leadership of President Nelson Chamisa, Prof. Masiya ran for the position of Member of Parliament in the Mberengwa West Constituency in the Midlands Province. Though he narrowly lost to the ZANU-PF candidate, his campaign was praised for its grassroots mobilization and innovative strategies.
Following the 2018 elections, Prof. Masiya served in various political portfolios under the charismatic leadership of President Chamisa. He was known for his sharp analytical skills, his ability to forge cross-party coalitions, and his unwavering commitment to democratic reforms and social justice. During this period, he played a key role in shaping the party’s policy positions on issues such as economic development, education, and healthcare.
Despite the challenges faced by the opposition movement in the post-2023 era, Prof. Masiya remained a prominent figure of President Chamisa, advocating for inclusive and transparent governance, and working tirelessly to amplify the voices of marginalized communities. His contributions to the political discourse in Zimbabwe have been widely recognized, in the country’s political landscape.
