Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – The Supreme Court of Zimbabwe has made history by ruling in favor of the 12 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) MPs, reinstating their presence on the ballot for the upcoming August 23rd, 2023 elections. The decision has been received with jubilation and hope, signaling a significant stride towards an inclusive and representative political landscape in the country.
The twelve candidates are Surrender Kapoikilu (Bulawayo Central), Minenhle Ntandoyenkosi Gumede (Bulawayo North), Nicola Watson (Bulawayo South), Raphael Sibanda (Cowdray Park), Discent Collins Bajila (Emakhandeni/Luveve) and Tshuma Dingilizwe (Entumbane/Njube), Prince Dube (Entumbane/ Njube), Dereck Gono (Lobengula/ Magwegwe), Desmond Makaza (Mpopoma/ Mzilikazi), Obert Manduna (Nketa), Desire Moyo (Nkulumane), Soneni Moyo (Pelandaba/Tshabalala), Gift Siziba (Pelandaba/ Tshabalala), Sichelesile Mahlangu (Pumula) and Albert Mhlanga (Pumula).
However, the Supreme Court’s ruling has also prompted concerns regarding the impartiality and independence of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), as Zanu PF politicians appear to exert influence over the commission’s internal processes. This decision raises questions about potential interference with ZEC’s ability to hold a free and fair election, and casts doubt on the integrity of the electoral system.
As the August 23 elections draw near, the CCC’s popularity nationwide indicates a strong possibility of victory. This, in turn, has raised suspicions about the motivations behind Zanu PF’s actions and their repeated use of manipulative tactics. The reversal of the High Court ruling has only further energized CCC supporters, reinforcing their determination to advocate for positive change and a brighter future for all citizens.
It is essential to commemorate this triumph while also recognizing that democracy hinges on active participation, civic engagement, and adherence to the rule of law. The restoration of CCC candidates who were improperly removed from the ballot highlights concerns regarding the electoral process and the institutions responsible for overseeing elections in Zimbabwe.
