Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), a prominent legal organization which specializes on cases that violetes human rights, has taken action in response to the controversial release of convicted rapist Bobby Makaza through a presidential amnesty. Expressing their deep concern over the matter, ZLHR has written a formal letter to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), urging them to provide transparent and comprehensive explanations for the decision.

The legal team from ZLHR, consisting of lawyers Tinashe Chinopfukutwa and Paidamoyo Saurombe, has been entrusted with the responsibility of seeking answers on behalf of Makaza’s victim, a young girl of just 15 years old. Acting as the victim’s representatives, Chinopfukutwa and Saurombe are determined to advocate for justice and accountability by demanding an explanation from the Director-General of ZPCS, Moses Chihobvu.

The letter, emphasizes the need for clarity regarding the grounds upon which Makaza was granted presidential amnesty. By directly addressing Chihobvu, ZLHR aims to shed light on the decision-making process that led to the release of an individual convicted of such a heinous crime. The lawyers argue that it is crucial for the ZPCS to provide a detailed account of the factors considered and the justifications behind the decision, in order to maintain transparency and uphold the principles of justice.

This initiative by ZLHR represents a significant step in holding accountable those responsible for the controversial release of Bobby Makaza. By amplifying the voice of the victim and seeking clarification from the relevant authorities, the legal team hopes to prevent further injustice and ensure that similar incidents are properly addressed in the future. Their demand for an explanation reflects a broader commitment to human rights and the pursuit of justice within Zimbabwe’s legal system.

The collaboration between the ruling political party, ZANU-PF, and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) to secure votes through the release of criminals has raised significant concerns among human rights advocates and the public. Such a collaboration could potentially compromise the integrity of the justice system and erode public trust. Critics argue that using the release of convicted individuals as a political strategy undermines the principles of justice and prioritizes short-term gains over the long-term safety and well-being of the society. The focus should be on ensuring a fair and impartial legal system that upholds the rights of victims while promoting rehabilitation and reintegration for offenders.
