In anticipation of the upcoming general elections scheduled for August, members of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) engaged in a crucial meeting with Nelson Chamisa, the leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). The primary objective of the meeting was to address concerns regarding the safety and security of journalists during the electoral process.

During the meeting, Mr. Chamisa assured the journalists that their well-being would be safeguarded not only during press briefings but also at the CCC’s rallies and events. Recognizing the pivotal role journalists play in disseminating information and fostering transparency, Mr. Chamisa pledged his commitment to ensuring a secure environment for media personnel.

One prominent issue discussed was the lack of media coverage by state-controlled media outlets of the CCC’s rallies and events. Mr. Chamisa expressed his disappointment, emphasizing the importance of media reforms within the state-controlled media landscape. He argued that the absence of comprehensive coverage hindered the prospect of a free and credible election and the need for a professional, non-partisan media space. Without a professional, non-partisan media environment, we cannot have a truly fair and credible election, Mr. Chamisa asserted.

He stressed the significance of media reforms to establish a media space that allows for unbiased reporting and diverse perspectives, promoting a more inclusive democratic process. Moreover, Mr. Chamisa raised concerns about recent incidents of harassment and arbitrary arrests of journalists. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring freedom for media personnel to cover the elections without fear of intimidation or repression. Acknowledging that a fair and transparent electoral process requires an unrestricted media, he called for measures to protect journalists and guarantee their ability to provide accurate information to the public.

The meeting between the ZUJ and Mr. Chamisa underscored a shared commitment to journalist safety and advocated for comprehensive media reforms. It highlighted the crucial role journalists play in informing the public and holding political parties accountable. The discussions reinforced the imperative of establishing a supportive and unbiased media environment that can contribute to a free and fair electoral process in Zimbabwe.
