We need a leader who is incorruptible and capable of inspiring a sense of service and selflessness amongst his team and fellow citizens. Amidst Zim’s leadership woes, Chimisa has managed to set an impressive bar of moral, honest, and genuine leadership required to modernize and build a nation. I argue that after R. Mugabe took control of the nation in 1980 ahead of the transformational J. Nkomo, he failed to shift focus to nation-building due to a “war hangover’. As a result of his overstay, he exhausted his once-key nationalistic narrative, through which he had managed to create a self-conscious but politically muzzled citizenry. His leadership skills failed to transform his comrades in government into honest and competent nation-builders.
The political culture of Zim’s government systems since RGM has been characterized by a false and selfish entitlement by the ruling elites who get into government and focus on personal compensation ahead of service, thus resulting in the plunder of national resources, corruption, and mismanagement by those in the ruling party, whose only protection was vile authoritarianism. Like RGM, ED is not a transformational leader. He has no capacity to cause the needed change, no charisma, and no grit to confront his comrades about a change of culture without unsettling his stolen rule. In the face of his quite evident failures, attempts by ED to reform political culture have spawned a newer generation of younger, sophisticated versions of the old guard who shield their excesses behind ZANU PF stickers and branding, as though to say we support ZANU PF for immunity from looting.
A Nelson Chamisa government culture can already be seen even before the CCC officially launches. Congress or no Congress, the new politics under Chamisa’s leadership is transformational and aims at resolving the leadership and mentality crises in our politics. He abandoned the stench of the regime, which had become an aroma to some of his compatriots in the alternative force.
Nelson Chamisa has done away with megastar politics, restored the sanctity of the citizen (mass), and inspired a culture of service and hard, honest work by all CCC champion leaders on the ground. Despite the propaganda peddled by the regime, those who follow Nelson Chamisa know that he is not swayed by the politics of boot-licking, patronage, or grandstanding. He doesn’t suffer from a lack of probity when demanding accountability from his team. No one can accuse NC of a lack of integrity or patronage. We can debate everything else, but what is evident is that Chamisa will instill in his government a culture of accountability, competence, integrity, and merit.
