Nicolas Maduro made his first court appearance today, facing four federal charges from the United States, which include drug trafficking and terrorism. He was accompanied by his wife, Cilia Flores, and their son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, who is alleged to lead a notorious crime gang. During the proceedings, all three pleaded not guilty, with Maduro asserting his identity as a “descent man.”
Despite their pleas, the trio will remain in custody until their next court date, scheduled for March 17, 2026. Interestingly, Maduro’s legal team did not seek bail, a move that experts suggest was unlikely to succeed given the gravity of the charges.
In a parallel development, the United Nations is convening an emergency session focused on the situation in Venezuela. Several nations, particularly those neighboring Venezuela, have voiced their condemnation of Maduro’s severe human rights violations and electoral fraud. The Venezuelan representative, however, countered these claims by accusing the United States of infringing upon Venezuela’s sovereignty.
Additionally, during the court proceedings, Maduro referred to himself as the leader of Venezuela while his wife continued to identify herself as the First Lady. Notably, it was announced that Venezuela’s Vice President would be sworn in as acting President later today.
