The Masvingo Urban Member of Parliament, Honorable Martin Mureri, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first sitting MP to attend a full council meeting in Masvingo City. This groundbreaking event marks a significant departure from the traditional absence of MPs at such meetings since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980.
Honorable Mureri’s decision to participate in the council meeting aligns with President Nelson Chamisa’s call for parliamentarians to actively engage with citizens and fully involve themselves in local governance matters without interfering. By attending the meeting, Honorable Mureri exemplifies the importance of bridging the gap between elected representatives and the local government, fostering enhanced communication and collaboration.
During the full council meeting, Mayor Alec Tabe took a moment to acknowledge Honorable Mureri’s presence and commend his historic attendance. This recognition highlights the significance of the occasion and the impact it may have on future interactions between MPs and the local council.
On February 23, 2024, Honorable Mureri made his debut at the full council meeting held at the Civic Center in Masvingo Urban. As an accomplished human rights lawyer, he expressed his primary motivation for attending the meeting: to acquire firsthand information on the issues affecting the residents of Masvingo Urban and to observe how Mayor Alec Tabe, the councilors, and the management address these challenges.
Honorable Mureri expressed his satisfaction with the way the mayor, councilors, and management articulated issues and offered effective solutions to address the problems facing Masvingo Urban. As the parliamentary representative for Masvingo Urban, he pledged to advocate for the release of Devolution funds from the Ministry of Finance. These funds would greatly assist Masvingo City Council in resolving critical issues, such as the lack of access to clean water.
The attendance of Honorable Mureri at this full council meeting strengthens the relationship between the council and parliament, fostering a closer working partnership between the two entities. Masvingo City Deputy Mayor Daniel Mberikunashe commended Honorable Mureri as a unique and exceptional politician who engages with councilors, citizens, and other stakeholders on matters concerning residents. This collaborative approach to leadership sets Honorable Mureri apart, reinforcing his commitment to effective representation.
Honorable Mureri affirmed his intention to attend more city council meetings in the future, further demonstrating his dedication to actively participate in local governance. Accompanying him to the Masvingo City Council meeting were Mr. Thomas Mbetu and Mr. Desire Struggle Nyahunda, underscoring the importance of collective engagement in addressing the needs of the community.
A Masvingo City councilor from the Zanu PF party, who preferred to remain anonymous due to fear of victimization, expressed his perspective on Honorable Mureri’s attendance at the full council meeting. According to the councilor, the attendance of Honorable Mureri highlights the unique and people-centered nature of President Chamisa’s members of parliament, in contrast to Zanu PF members like Daniel Shumba, who have shown a disregard for councilors by never attending council meetings.
