…. Unpacking the advertising strategies in the recently launched CCC Election Manifesto

We analyzed a 100 paged Citizens Coalition for Change [CCC] election manifesto launched recently in Bulawayo by party President Nelson Chamisa.

Election manifestos are essentially marketing documents, using the tools of advertising to persuade voters to support a political party. The recently released manifesto by Zimbabwe’s leading opposition political party, the CCC party, headed by advocate Chamisa, provides an excellent case study of political advertising in practice. As we analyze the CCC manifesto through the lens of political advertising, we find a document highly attuned to employing proven strategies to connect with citizens and mobilize their vote. The manifesto provides a masterclass in the art of political persuasion, using various emotional, rhetorical, and informational techniques to influence the hearts and minds of voters.

This analysis will highlight the key advertising methods found in the CCC manifesto and their purpose in driving the party’s election campaign. We will illustrate how factors like branding, messaging, inclusion, simplicity, and vision-based themes are skillfully incorporated to produce a compelling political advertisement for President Chamisa and the promise of a “New Great Zimbabwe.” The CCC manifesto demonstrates how crafting the right advertising strategy can potentially translate into votes on election day.

1. Branding the Party and Leader

A core component of political advertising is establishing a strong, recognizable brand for the party and leader. The CCC manifesto invests heavily in branding Chamisa as a “change champion” who will lead a “citizens government” guided by the values of “love, trust, tolerance, diversity, pluralism and peace.” The use of the word “citizen” throughout the manifesto aims to portray Chamisa and the CCC as representing ordinary Zimbabweans and promoting their interests. The manifesto branding constructs a narrative of Chamisa as an agent of radical change from years of misrule, appealing to voters desire for a new direction.

2. Emotional Messaging

Political advertising often uses emotional appeals to connect with voters.

The CCC manifesto employs emotions like hope, pride, dignity, and reconciliation throughout. The title “A New Great Zimbabwe for Everyone” evokes national pride. Language emphasizing “restoring” human rights, the economy, and standards of living appeals to emotions of loss and hope. Discussing reconciliation and healing past divisions makes emotional appeals to unity and tolerance. These emotional themes aim to make voters receptive to the manifesto’s policy ideas.

3. Simplicity and Direct Language

Effective political advertising uses simple, direct language that is easily understandable and memorable for the average voter. The CCC manifesto generally uses simple, straightforward language in outlining its vision and policy proposals. Each policy area has a clear “Transformation Marker” summing up the key changes proposed. The manifesto also starts with a short, simplified 5-point summary of the key proposals that is easy to digest. This contrasts with the complex bureaucratic language of traditional party manifestos.

4. Segmentation and Inclusion

Political advertising needs to target different voter segments. The CCC manifesto specifically outlines programs and policies to appeal to various groups like youth, women, minorities, diaspora Zimbabweans, and war veterans. This segmentation demonstrates the party’s commitment to be inclusive and represent all Zimbabweans. Groups like women, youth and people with disabilities are singled out for expanded rights and opportunities, directly signaling the party’s support to these critical voter segments.

5. Vision and Values Based

Political advertising aims to go beyond specific policies to communicate a party’s overall vision and values. The CCC manifesto articulates an overarching vision of a “New Great Zimbabwe” that runs throughout the document. It elevates broad values like human dignity, equality, transparency, tolerance, and constitutionalism that encapsulate what the party stands for. This vision-values component of political advertising seeks to build a narrative about the party’s identity and agency for change that voters can support beyond just policies.

6. Policy Specifics with Numbers

While political advertising tends to avoid too many details, some specific policy proposals and statistics can demonstrate seriousness and practicality. The CCC manifesto includes some specific policy ideas like scrapping certain taxes, constructing particular infrastructure projects, and setting quantitative targets like creating 5 million jobs. Detailed proposals on issues like land reform, debt management and providing title deeds give substance. Extensive use of statistics and figures on economic metrics also builds credibility and shows that the party has done its homework.

7. Rhetoric and Repetition

Political advertising frequently uses rhetorical language, slogans, and repetition to drive home core messages. The CCC manifesto centers around core slogans like “New Great Zimbabwe”, “Citizens Government,” and “Everyone matters.” Rhetorical devices like alliteration (“prosperity for everyone”) are used throughout. Key words like “restoration”, “healing”, “reconciliation” are repeated in different sections. These rhetorical techniques aim to reinforce the manifesto’s key themes in the minds of voters.

8. Imagery and Visuals

Visual imagery can make political advertising more memorable and engaging.

The CCC manifesto incorporates visual images like the Zimbabwean flag, a crowd scene, and a picture of President Chamisa. Photographs help put faces and scenes to the policy proposals, appealing to voters on a visual-emotional level. The limited use of visuals focuses attention on the core message rather than overloading the manifesto.

In summary, the CCC election manifesto employs a range of classic political advertising strategies, from establishing a strong party-leader brand, to vision-values messaging, the inclusion of key voter segments, emotional appeals, clear and simple language, selective policy specifics and rhetorical devices. This aims to persuade voters by informing minds and connecting with hearts. How effective the manifesto is as political advertising depends on how well it motivates and mobilizes Zimbabwean citizens to vote for President Chamisa and the CCC.
