The ZANU PF government is currently facing intense backlash from citizens due to a recent controversial statement made by its spokesman, Nick Mangwana. In his statement, Mangwana declared that the government lacks the necessary resources to pay civil servants in US dollars, citing the inability to print foreign currency as a major hindrance. This assertion has sparked outrage among the populace, as it highlights the dire economic situation in the country.
In response to Mangwana’s statement, concerned citizens have taken the opportunity to remind him of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s previous claim that the local currency is the strongest in the region. This stark contradiction has only fueled public discontent and skepticism towards the government’s economic policies. Many citizens argue that if the local currency is indeed as strong as claimed, the government should be able to meet the needs of its civil servants and ensure their fair compensation.
Struggle Nyahunda, a prominent youth official representing the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has been vocal in denouncing the government’s handling of the economy. Nyahunda pointed out that despite rigging the 2018 elections, Mnangagwa has failed to effectively rig the country’s economy.
The deteriorating living conditions, skyrocketing inflation, and widespread unemployment are clear indicators of the government’s inability to manage the economy efficiently.
The criticism faced by the ZANU PF government extends beyond mere dissatisfaction with economic policies. It reflects a deep-seated frustration among citizens who have been grappling with persistent hardships for an extended period. Inadequate healthcare, and limited access to education have further exacerbated the public’s discontent.
As calls for change grow louder, civil society organizations are actively advocating for transparency, accountability, and meaningful reforms in governance and economic management. The aim is to restore public trust and create an environment conducive to sustainable development and improved livelihoods for all Zimbabweans.
