Three City of Harare employees tragically lost their lives at the Morton Jaffray Water Works near Norton on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred when the workers entered a decommissioned water clarifier, and authorities suspect toxic gas buildup may be to blame.
According to sources, the workers should not have been in the area, and it’s possible they were suffocated by toxic gases from the sludge. Two workers died at the scene, while the third succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The City of Harare has extended condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.
This incident is reminiscent of previous tragedies, including the deaths of two City of Harare employees at a Glen View sewer treatment plant earlier this year, suspected to be linked to hydrogen sulfide exposure. Toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide, methane, and ammonia can be deadly in confined spaces, and the investigation will aim to determine the exact cause of the incident.
