Crackdowns on Dissent Confirm the 2030 Agenda Is a Threat to Our Constitution
The report that critics of President Mnangagwa are facing a State-led crackdown is yet another warning sign that Zimbabwe is drifting further away from constitutional governance and deeper into authoritarianism. When a government responds to criticism with intimidation, arrests, and coercive policing, it is not displaying confidence — it is revealing fear.
This pattern of repression must be understood in its proper context.
It is occurring at the very moment when senior ZANU–PF leaders are openly mobilising to amend the Constitution and extend the President’s tenure to 2030.
The President’s silence, coupled with these escalations, sends a clear message: dissent is being targeted because the 2030 power-extension project depends on silencing those who oppose it.
Let me be clear:
1. You cannot defend the country while violating its Constitution.
The 2013 Constitution protects freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly, and political choice.
Cracking down on critics is a direct assault on these rights, and therefore an assault on the Constitution itself.
2. A government that fears scrutiny cannot be trusted with extended power.
If criticism triggers repression today, what will happen tomorrow if constitutional term limits are removed and accountability is further weakened?
3. The crackdown exposes the truth behind the 2030 Agenda.
It is not about “development” or “continuity”.
It is about ensuring that those in power face no constitutional restraints and no democratic challenge.
Zimbabwe is a constitutional republic, not a fiefdom.
The Constitution belongs to the people — not to political elites — and its protections are not optional.
When leaders attack critics instead of addressing concerns, they confirm that their aim is not to govern democratically but to govern indefinitely.
I call upon all Zimbabweans — workers, traders, farmers, students, professionals, faith communities, political actors, and the diaspora — to remain vigilant.
We must reject intimidation and resist any attempt to rewrite our national charter for personal benefit.
No nation builds stability by breaking its own supreme law.
No democracy survives when criticism becomes a crime.
And no patriotic citizen can accept a future where power is extended through fear instead of consent.
Zimbabwe deserves better.
Our Constitution deserves respect.
The people deserve their future back.
