On October 18, 2025, the women of Gutu Central, led by Mrs. Sekeidzai “Mai Vembo” Shayamano, came together to make a significant contribution to their community by purchasing and distributing maize seeds. This initiative not only demonstrates solidarity among women but also addresses the pressing need for agricultural resources as the rainy season approaches.
The distribution event was a beacon of hope for many, as the majority of families in Gutu Central rely on agriculture for their sustenance. Mrs. Shayamano explained, “As women, we contribute money monthly and then buy our maize seeds to ensure our success in farming.” This proactive approach is particularly crucial given the challenges faced by opposition members in accessing resources, as Zanu-PF has often sidelined them in the distribution of agricultural inputs.
Honourable Matthew Takaona, who represented Gutu Central as President Nelson Chamisa’s candidate in the 2023 harmonized elections, also made a noteworthy contribution to the maize seed purchase. His ongoing support for various community projects—ranging from chicken rearing to women, youth and men empowerment—highlights his commitment to uplifting the people of Gutu Central.
The seed handover ceremony was filled with joy and celebration, with Honourable Takaona dancing to the delight of the maize seed recipients. His enthusiasm was infectious, creating an atmosphere of hope and community spirit.
Mrs. Getlude Dhobha expressed the determination of the women in Gutu Central, stating, “As concerned women, we want to fight poverty through agriculture. That is why we are supporting each other.” This collective effort is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the community.
The event took place in Ward 33, benefiting 98 families, each of whom received 25 kilograms of maize seed. Mrs. Enita Mukombe expressed a desire for the program to expand, saying, “We want to have more people benefiting from this maize seed program if our funds permit.”
With predictions of a favorable rainy season for the 2025-2026 farming period, it is crucial for farmers, particularly women, to begin preparing their land and seeds. Mrs. Hilder Jaison emphasized the importance of readiness, stating, “Now is the time for women and farmers to start their preparations.”
Additionally, Mrs. Makanzwei Muzondo called on local businesses and individuals to support women in their agricultural endeavors by providing essential farming inputs such as fertilizers and tools. Such support could significantly enhance the productivity of these women and contribute to food security in the region.
This initiative not only empowers women but also fosters a sense of community resilience, paving the way for a brighter agricultural future in Gutu Central.
