On October 26, 2024, hundreds of young Zimbabweans gathered at the homestead of the late Mr. Chomunorwa Chamisa, the uncle of President Nelson Chamisa, to commemorate a memorial service and unveil a tombstone. This event was not merely a tribute to a cherished family member but also a powerful expression of solidarity for President Chamisa, who has become a beacon of hope and change for the youth of Zimbabwe.
The assembly served as a vibrant display of unity among the youth, who came together to honor both President Chamisa and his family during this significant occasion. In a show of love and support, youth attendees sang various songs, most notably, “President Chamisa is our commander.” This anthem resonated deeply, reflecting their unwavering allegiance to President Chamisa, a leader they view as a champion for their aspirations.
Additionally, the youth engaged in a one song, asking, “Why do you hate President Chamisa?” This pointed question was clearly directed toward President Chamisa’s political adversaries, who have relentlessly criticized his leadership and stole his political party Citizens Coalition for Change. The youth passionately declared their commitment to stand by President Chamisa, emphasizing that, despite the animosity from Zanu PF and its proxies, they are determined to support him.
President Nelson Chamisa’s ascent to political prominence is characterized by his significant contributions to student leadership and youth advocacy. As a former leader of the Zimbabwe National University Students’ Union and the MDC National Youth Leader, he has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to addressing the concerns of young people. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest minister in Zimbabwe’s history, showcasing his capability and the trust placed in him by his peers.
His impact has not gone unnoticed. President Chamisa has been recognized as the most influential youth leader by numerous organizations, receiving various awards that highlight his dedication to public service and leadership. These accolades have solidified his role as a role model for both young and older generations alike.
In the 2023 harmonized elections, President Chamisa’s the then party, the Citizens Coalition for Change, achieved significant victories, winning numerous council and parliamentary seats across the country. This success translated into a series of groundbreaking appointments that reflect his commitment to youth empowerment.
Among these appointments was Shantel Chiwara, who became the youngest and first female mayor of Masvingo, breaking a 50-year history of male leadership in the city. In Epworth, President Chamisa’s vision for youth empowerment was realized with the appointment of Mayoress Anna Sande, who is both the first female and the youngest chairperson in that municipality. Similarly, in Norton, youth leadership was exemplified by Emmanuel Chikaponya, serving as deputy mayor, and Jerina Mtingwende, the youngest deputy mayor of Chitungwiza.
Despite these remarkable achievements, President Chamisa and his youthful appointees face significant challenges from political opponents, particularly from the ruling party, Zanu PF. Recently, several young leaders, including Mayoress Chiwara, Mayoress Sande, Ms. Mtingwende, and Deputy Mayor Chikaponya, were recalled from their positions by Zanu PF proxies Sengezo Tshabangu who is anti youth, which underscores the ongoing political strife in Zimbabwe.
This tactic aims to undermine the progress made in promoting youth representation and governance. However, the youth remain undeterred. Currently, Rosemary Muronda, who leads Harare as deputy Mayor, stands as a testament to youth leadership, while youthful councillors from Bulawayo like Arnold Batsirai Dube and Shepherd Sithole from Bulawayo continue to push for change and advocate for their communities if though they were recalled.
In parliament, President Chamisa has also entrusted several young leaders to represent the aspirations of the youth. Notable figures include Takudzwa Ngadziore, Hon. Ostallos Siziba, Hon. Pashor , Hon. Eric Gono, and Hon. Ropafadzo Makumire, among others. These leaders reflect Chamisa’s commitment to including young voices in legislative processes, ensuring that the needs and concerns of the youth are addressed at the highest levels of government.
The gathering at Mr. Chomunorwa’s homestead was more than a memorial; it was a clarion call for the youth of Zimbabwe. Their passionate songs and declarations of support for President Chamisa underscore a growing movement that seeks to empower young people and reshape the political landscape of the nation.
As the President Chamisa is preparing to launch powerful political movement, the youth’s steadfast loyalty to President Chamisa and their determination to challenge the status quo will play a crucial role in defining Zimbabwe’s future. With a robust foundation of support and a commitment to progressive change, President Chamisa is poised to lead the next generation into a new era of governance that prioritizes their voices and aspirations.
In conclusion, the youth of Zimbabwe have made their stance clear: “President Chamisa is our commander.” Their rallying cry serves as both a declaration of allegiance and a challenge to those who oppose his vision for a brighter future. With the backing of the youth, Chamisa’s leadership may well herald a transformative chapter in Zimbabwe’s political narrative, one that embraces inclusivity and empowers the next generation.
