The city of Masvingo is in a state of mourning following the untimely passing of Felix Mapfumo, a beloved and popular local DJ and musician affectionately known as “Flexa”. He was just 29 years old.
Mapfumo, who was born on June 23, 1995, had established himself as a rising star in Masvingo’s vibrant music and entertainment scene. As a talented DJ and versatile musician, he had captivated audiences across the city with his energetic performances and infectious melodies.
“Felix was the best and most energetic entertainer who put Masvingo on the map,” said Masvingo Urban Member of Parliament Advocate Martin Mureri, expressing his deep sorrow at the loss of this promising young talent.
Mapfumo’s passing has struck a chord with residents of all ages in Masvingo. Advocate Collin Maboke, the former Mayor of Masvingo City and former Ward 2 Councillor, shared his personal grief, saying, “As his former ward councillor, I am deeply pained by the death of this young life. He was a gifted DJ who entertained the youth and adults alike with his music and DJ skills.”
He was working as resident DJ in popular Masvingo urban Mundondo bar located in Masvingo rank.
The current Masvingo Urban Ward 3 Councillor, Maxwell Madhuma, echoed these sentiments, describing Mapfumo as “a genius and a youthful musician” whose loss has devastated the community.
Mapfumo passed away yesterday at the Mazorodze Clinic in Masvingo City, after battling an undisclosed illness for some time. Mourners have gathered at his family home in Shumba Street, Mustafa, in Ward 3, to pay their respects.
Masvingo City Mayor Alec Tabe conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Mapfumo’s family, saying, “We as the Masvingo City family are devastated by the death of our son. Rest in peace, our beloved entertainer.”
Mapfumo will be laid to rest tomorrow, July 17, 2024, at the Mangwani Cemetery, located behind the Junior Private School along Harare Road in Masvingo Urban. Thousands of Masvingo residents are expected to gather to bid a final farewell to this young, talented artist who left an indelible mark on the city’s cultural landscape.
Advocate Maboke’s message to the youth of Masvingo serves as a poignant reminder of Mapfumo’s legacy: “Use your talents to empower yourselves and your community at large, as Felix did.” The city of Masvingo will undoubtedly miss the vibrant presence and musical legacy of Felix “Flexa” Mapfumo.
