At Mawungwa Business Centre

Mr. Norman Mawunga,

One of Gutu South Zanu-PF terror group members, Mr. Norman Mawunga, killed himself. He was part of the gang that belonged to Zanu-PF member of Parliament, Mr. Pupurai Togarepi. This gang terrorized, beat, displaced, harassed, and intimidated Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters in Gutu South before, during, and after the August 23, 2023, harmonized elections.

Mawunga’s body was found this morning hanging on a tree. He hanged himself near Mawungwa Business Centre.

Interestingly, the deceased (Norman Mawunga) and other Zanu-PF members kidnapped, severely assaulted, and injured Gutu South CCC members at Mawungwa Business Centre before President Nelson Chamisa addressed the Gutu cluster rally. Also, Mawunga and Gutu South Zanu-PF members stoned President Chamisa’s motorcade as the convoy was going to Mawungwa Business Centre.

This man (Mawunga) and his gang also chased aspiring Gutu South CCC member, Mr. Hamandishe Gobvu, and his campaign team using Togarepi and Zanu-PF branded cars.

Mawunga’s violent acts against CCC members have been widely reported on Studio 7, Change Radio, and Masvingo Mirror, among other news outlets.

In August 2023, police at Mawungwa Business Centre refused to open a docket against notorious Gutu South Zanu-PF members, including Mawunga, after CCC members reported the case of being kidnapped and assaulted. One police officer said, “We could not arrest Mawunga because we feared him; he was a Zanu-PF member and one of Togarepi’s most dangerous men. Even the police feared him.”

There are a lot of speculations about why Mawunga committed suicide. Some of the people the reporter interviewed said:

“Norman Mawunga committed suicide because his brothers accused him of selling land [house] stands without their knowledge.”

One Zanu-PF member who refused to be named believes that “Norman Mawunga might have died because of evil spirits that haunted him after he beat and injured CCC members.”

One schoolteacher at a school near Mawungwa Business Centre said, “All teachers were afraid of the violent Zanu-PF member Norman Mawunga. He assaulted and threatened teachers who were perceived to be CCC supporters before and during the August 23, 2023, harmonized elections.”

The above information shows that Gutu South residents are still to get real information on the causes of Mawunga’s death.

More details to follow.
