In a startling revelation, it has been reported that King Mswati of Eswatini has recently purchased approximately twenty Mercedes Benz cars worth a staggering R50 million for his wives. Each car is said to cost around R2.5 million, adding to the growing concerns over the king’s extravagant lifestyle. The news comes at a time when the country is grappling with a severe health crisis, as patients in hospitals are losing their lives due to a lack of essential medication.
According to sources, the cars arrived in Eswatini around May 23, 2023, and stringent security measures were implemented to prevent any unauthorized photography or leaks. Swaziland News has been diligently pursuing evidence of this purchase, highlighting the alleged use of public funds to acquire four Mercedes Vianos.
Earlier this week, one of the cars, registered as M109, was spotted heading towards the Palace and made a stop at Nkhanini Royal Offices to refuel. When approached for comment, the King’s spokesperson, Percy Simelane, expressed unawareness of the purchase and emphasized that he would only have knowledge if public funds were involved.
Sikelela Dlamini, the Secretary General of the MultiStakeholder Forum (MSF), shared his astonishment at the King’s continued extravagant lifestyle. Dlamini pointed out the pressing challenges faced by the country, particularly in the health and education sectors, which are struggling due to resource shortages. He further expressed concern that such a lavish lifestyle from the King could hinder the country’s development.
The alleged purchase of luxury cars for the King’s wives has sparked outrage among the citizens of Eswatini, who are already grappling with the devastating impact of the health crisis. Many have voiced their frustration and disappointment over the apparent lack of priority given to essential services and the mismanagement of public funds.
