As Zanu PF’s Resolution Number One faces widespread condemnation from the public, ordinary citizens, and civic organizations, it is clear that the proposed extension of Mr Mnangagwa’s tenure beyond 2028 is a brazen attempt to subvert the constitution. This move is not only unconstitutional but also a stark reminder of the ruling party’s disregard for the rule of law and the will of the people.
The constitution of Zimbabwe is clear: the president is limited to two terms in office. Any attempts to extend this limit would require a referendum, which would give the people a say in their own governance. The proposed extension is, therefore, a clear affront to democracy and the sovereignty of the Zimbabwean people.
This move should serve as a wake-up call for every Zimbabwean who believes in change and reshaping our future. We must come together as a country and reject this unconstitutional power grab. The people of Zimbabwe deserve better than to be dictated to by a ruling party that seems determined to cling to power at all costs.
We urge all citizens, civic organizations, and opposition parties to join forces in condemning this move and demanding that the government respect the constitution. We must stand united in our pursuit of democracy, accountability, and good governance.
The time for change is now. Let us rise up and defend our constitution, our democracy, and our future.
