In a disturbing display of force, the Zimbabwe Republic Police forcefully apprehended Honourable Jameson Timba, a prominent figure in President Nelson Chamisa’s camp, along with several other pro-Chamisa youth leaders in Harare earlier today. The incident has ignited widespread outrage and condemnation from political allies aligned with Chamisa.
According to Honourable Senator Vongai Tome, who oversees the well-being of pro-Chamisa members, the arrests took place at Hon. Timba’s residence during a gathering to commemorate the Day of the African Child. Eyewitnesses reported that heavily armed police officers abruptly stormed the event, resorting to brutal tactics against the attendees.
“They arrived in large police trucks, heavily armed, and launched an unprovoked attack,” recounted an anonymous youth member. “We were simply celebrating Youth Day at Hon. Timba’s residence, and the police descended upon us without any justification.”
Several of the detained individuals sustained injuries, with some requiring urgent medical attention due to significant bleeding. Honourable Agency Gumbo, a seasoned lawyer heading the pro-Chamisa legal team, along with other prominent lawyers supporting Chamisa, are presently at the respective police stations where the arrests were made, actively seeking the immediate release of Timba and the other detainees.
Senator Tome expressed her outrage over the incident, stating, “This is a blatant violation of our democratic rights and a clear attempt to suppress the opposition’s voice. Hon. Timba and these youth leaders were peacefully engaging in a lawful activity when the police launched a brutal assault.”
The arrests have also sparked the condemnation of Honourable Martin Mureri, a Member of Parliament representing Masvingo Urban and an esteemed human rights lawyer. “I strongly denounce the arrest and severe mistreatment of Honourable Timba and the pro-Chamisa youth,” Mureri remarked. “This flagrantly violates their constitutional rights and exemplifies the government’s ongoing crackdown on dissent and political opposition.”
As the situation unfolds, concerns are mounting regarding the safety and well-being of the detained individuals. Supporters of the pro-Chamisa movement are intensifying their calls for the immediate release of their leaders and members.
The incident has further exacerbated the already tense political climate in Zimbabwe, with the opposition accusing the government of employing heavy-handed tactics to silence its critics.
