CCC aspirant for ward 5 in Seke Constituency, Alice Tsingano, has been remanded into custody until 30th August. She, along with three other female activists, was arrested based on false allegations of inciting violence made by ZANU PF MP candidate Tobias Maoresa Kashamba.
Tsingano’s arrest followed her visit to the Ziko ZRP Police Post to report an incident of political violence, after receiving threats from ZANU PF militia who had intended to set her house ablaze. Upon reaching the ZRP Ziko Post, she encountered Maoresa, accompanied by ZANU PF members involved in inter-party violence. Maoresa exerted influence over the ZRP officers, leading to Tsingano’s arrest.
On the 20th of July, Alice was assaulted by ZANU PF hooligans led by Tafadzwa Chitate in the Besa area of Seke Constituency.
Tsingano promptly reported the incident at the Ziko Police Post, but the ZRP officers failed to take any action.
It is crucial to highlight the concerning actions of the ZANU PF government in this case. The arrest of opposition candidates and the failure to address political violence not only undermine democratic principles but also suppress the voices of those aiming to participate in the electoral process. The ZANU PF government should be held accountable for such actions that infringe upon the rights of citizens to engage in fair and open political discourse.
