The UK government has announced the appointment of Mr Peter Vowles as His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Zimbabwe. Mr Vowles will assume his new role in September 2023, succeeding Ms Melanie Robinson CMG.
Peter Vowles brings with him a wealth of experience in diplomacy and international affairs. Born in Oxford, UK, he currently resides in Moray, Scotland, and is married to Hannah Vowles. His impressive career spans over three decades and includes various positions within the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and international organizations.
Mr Vowles has been serving as the FCDO’s Transformation Director since 2022. Prior to this, he held the position of Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Myanmar from 2021 to 2022. From 2018 to 2021, he worked as the Director for Asia, Caribbean, and Overseas Territories at the FCDO (formerly known as the Department for International Development) DFID.
During his tenure as the DFID Country Director at the British High Commission in Nairobi from 2016 to 2018, Mr Vowles played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Kenya. He also served as the Head of Programme Delivery at DFID from 2013 to 2016.
Throughout his career, Mr Vowles has demonstrated his commitment to international development and humanitarian efforts. His assignments include serving as the Deputy DFID Country Director at the British Embassy in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, from 2010 to 2013, and as the Head of Global Partnerships at the British High Commission in New Delhi from 2007 to 2010.
Mr Vowles has worked in diverse locations across the globe, including Kabul, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. He taught as a teacher for the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture in Zimbabwe between 1992 and 1993, gaining firsthand experience of the local education system and deepening his understanding of the country’s culture and society. His valuable insights from this experience will undoubtedly inform his approach as His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Zimbabwe.
His other roles include serving as the Governance and Security Team Leader at the British Embassy in Kabul in 2006 and as a Health and Development Consultant at Mott MacDonald in 2005-2006. In Bangladesh, he held positions such as Population & Health Programme Director at the British High Commission in Dhaka and World Bank Health Adviser.
As His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Vowles will play a crucial role in strengthening bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe. With his extensive experience and diplomatic acumen, he is expected to contribute significantly to the development of political, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
