CCC’s Honourable Tendai Biti, the Member of Parliament for Harare East and former finance minister, who has extensive expertise in economic matters has voiced grave concerns about the rapidly deteriorating state of the Zimbabwe dollar. Writing on his Twitter handle earlier today, he highlighted the alarming pace at which the currency’s value is diminishing, emphasizing the severe consequences it has on the livelihoods of the Zimbabwean people.
With a sense of urgency, Honourable Biti revealed that a mere two weeks ago, the exchange rate stood at US$1 to ZW$1000. At that time, US$1000 was equivalent to a flat ZW$1 million. However, the economic landscape has undergone a drastic shift since then, with the current exchange rate plummeting to US$1 to ZW$4000. This means that within a shockingly short span of just ten days, hardworking individuals and pensioners have experienced an astronomical loss of 400% in their wages and pensions. The implications of this rapid depreciation are dire, as it erodes the purchasing power and financial security of the already struggling population.
In light of these distressing developments, Honourable Biti boldly asserts that the current administration, characterized by what he terms a “kakistocracy,” has utterly failed. The failure is not partial or subject to interpretation but an unequivocal and absolute collapse of governance. He emphasizes that the consequences of this financial crisis cannot be ignored, as it directly impacts the well-being and survival of ordinary Zimbabweans.
Turning his attention to the figure of Mr. Mthuli Ncube, the Finance Minister appointed with the promise of stability and reform, Honourable Biti does not mince words. He paints a bleak picture of Mr. Ncube’s performance, branding him as an incompetent, clueless charlatan, and suggests that he has fallen under the influence and control of powerful cartels. Rather than serving as the guardian of the nation’s finances, the Treasury, under Mr. Ncube’s leadership, has transformed into a gate crasher, facilitating and exacerbating the prevailing economic challenges.
According to Honourable Biti, the consequences of Mr. Ncube’s actions and policies have extended beyond economic instability. They have fostered an environment conducive to rampant state looting, with corruption reaching unprecedented levels. This unbridled pillaging of national resources not only perpetuates the suffering of the Zimbabwean people but also undermines the very foundations of the nation.
Honourable Tendai Biti’s statements reflect a deep concern for the deteriorating state of the Zimbabwe dollar and its detrimental impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. His words highlight the failure of the current administration and criticize the performance of Finance Minister Mr. Mthuli Ncube, attributing incompetence, cluelessness, and an association with powerful cartels to his leadership. The urgent need for stability, reform, and an end to state looting remains at the forefront of Honourable Biti’s message.
