On Sunday, 11th January 2026, Honourable Tendeukai Matara, an opposition member of parliament representing the women’s constituency of Masvingo, made a significant contribution to the education of underprivileged learners in Bikita South by donating essential educational supplies, including books, book covers, and tape.
The donations have a direct impact on 330 learners from 11 wards within Bikita South: Ward 1, Ward 2, Ward 3, Ward 4, Ward 6, Ward 7, Ward 8, Ward 14, Ward 27, and Ward 29. This initiative aims to alleviate the educational challenges faced by students in these areas.
Honourable Matara stated, “I have provided the following supplies to support those in need: 3 boxes of 40×10 A5 books, 4 boxes of 20×10 A4 books, 4 boxes of 100 one-quart exercise books, 4 boxes of 100 book covers, and 600 rolls of sello -tape.” She emphasized the importance of education and expressed her commitment to helping the younger generation.
“As a former teacher in rural areas, I understand the struggles these learners encounter. I know firsthand how critical these supplies are for their academic success,” she added.
Honourable Matara, who graduated from Masvingo Teachers College, taught at various rural primary schools in the region before being elected as a member of parliament in 2023 under the leadership of President Nelson Chamisa.
The timing of this donation coincides perfectly with the opening of schools today, which is especially beneficial given the financial hardships many families in rural Bikita South face. Due to poverty and high unemployment rates, a significant number of parents struggle to meet the costs associated with their children’s education, including fees, uniforms, and necessary supplies.
A parent of one beneficiary expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I want to thank Honourable Matara for helping our children with books and covers. This assistance is invaluable and greatly appreciated.”
In addition to educational supplies, Honourable Matara, a staunch advocate for women’s and girls’ rights, also donated 4boxes of 48units of menstrual pads to female learners. This initiative addresses a critical issue, as many girls without access to sanitary products often miss school for at least five days each month during their menstrual cycles. This absenteeism can result in approximately 20 days of missed school each term, significantly impacting their academic performance.
To combat this issue, Honourable Matara emphasizes the need for the government and other stakeholders to provide free sanitary products to underprivileged rural female learners. “It is essential that we ensure every girl can attend school without fear or shame, regardless of their menstrual health,” she asserted.
Honourable Matara’s contributions exemplify her dedication to improving the educational landscape for the most vulnerable members of society, paving the way for a brighter future for all students in the region.
The recipients of the stationery and menstruation pads were chosen by local community members, school teachers, and administrators. Importantly, the selection was made without regard to the political affiliations of the students’ parents.
