Chinhoyi’s Ward 7 Councillor Arnold Muronga has issued a stern warning to those involved in early child marriages and exploitation of young girls in the area. In a statement, Cllr Muronga said he has noticed a concerning trend of early marriages and exploitation of young girls by artisanal miners, known as makorokoza, and is taking immediate action.
“I will not tolerate any form of exploitation or abuse of our children,” Cllr Muronga said. “Those found engaging in such activities will face the full force of the law.” He has urged residents to come forward with information about early marriage or statutory rape activities in the ward, promising confidentiality and assuring that their contribution will be invaluable in protecting the children.
The Councillor cited the Constitution of Zimbabwe, specifically Section 81 (1), which guarantees the right of children to protection from economic and sexual exploitation, including child marriage. He also referenced the Marriage Act and the Sexual Offences Act, which set the minimum age for marriage at 18 years and criminalize sexual relations with minors.
Cllr Muronga has called on all constituents to join him in the fight against early marriage and exploitation, saying, “Let us work together to create a safe and nurturing environment for our children to grow and thrive.” Residents with information or concerns are encouraged to reach out to his office and the police.
