In a remarkable achievement, Honourable Ropafadzo Makumire, the youthful opposition member of parliament for Chiredzi Central, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Zimcelebs Best Member of Parliament Award. This accolade is recognized as one of the highest honors for parliamentarians in Zimbabwe, with winners determined through an online voting process conducted by the citizens. Notably, opposition members of parliament have increasingly outperformed their Zanu-PF counterparts in advocating for the rights and well-being of Zimbabweans.
Recently, Honourable Fadzayi Mahere won an online voting contest against Zanu-PF MPs, demonstrating the growing influence of the opposition. Many Zanu-PF members entered parliament through dubious means such as rigging, vote buying, and intimidation of voters, with notable cases of recalls orchestrated by Zanu-PF proxy Sengezo Tshabangu to remove capable opposition members like Honourable Ostallos Gift Siziba and Honourable Amos Chibaya.
Majority of Zanu PF parliamentarians such Scott Sakupwanya have no tertiary qualifications. In addition, many Zanu PF members of parliament are good in singing in parliament and chanting ED2030.
Elected to parliament in 2023 under the dynamic leadership of President Nelson Chamisa, Honourable Makumire has become an influential voice in the National Assembly, consistently advocating for critical issues such as reducing the Value Added Tax (VAT) and improving salary structures for civil servants. His commitment to addressing the needs of his constituents and the broader Zimbabwean populace has garnered significant public support, contributing to his success in this year’s awards.
Honourable Makumire’s impressive educational background and political experience significantly bolster his capabilities as a parliamentarian. Born on April 15, 1993, in Chiredzi, he is married and has a well-rounded educational foundation. He attended Tshovani Primary School before advancing to Chiredzi Christian High School. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe, a Master of Urban Design from the National University of Science and Technology, and a Certificate in Project Planning and Management from the University of Zimbabwe. Since taking office as a member of parliament for Chiredzi Central in 2023, he has also served as a Councillor for Ward 3 in Chiredzi Town from 2018 to 2023, including a term as Deputy Council Chairman during that period.
In parliament, Honourable Makumire has distinguished himself by advocating policies designed to enhance the quality of life for Zimbabweans. His efforts to lower VAT demonstrate his commitment to making essential goods more affordable for families, while his advocacy for better salaries for civil servants seeks to acknowledge and reward their hard work. Additionally, he has been actively involved in community outreach programs, engaging with constituents to understand their needs and advocate for their interests in parliament. His approachable demeanor and willingness to listen have helped him forge strong relationships with the people he represents.
Honourable Ropafadzo Makumire’s recognition as the Best Member of Parliament for 2025 serves as a testament to his dedication to public service and effective representation of the people of Chiredzi Central. As he continues to champion the causes that matter most to his constituents, his commitment to transparency, accountability, and community engagement sets a commendable example for future leaders in Zimbabwe. This award not only highlights his individual achievements but also reflects the power of where citizens play a direct role in recognizing and celebrating their leaders’ contributions.
