Harare, the National Youth Taskforce has issued a bold statement rejecting the Vision 2030 agenda advanced by ZANU PF and it’s proxies, denouncing it as a desperate and illegitimate attempt to extend Mr Mnangagwa’s presidential term of office. The youth-driven group described the administration as corrupt, out of touch with the people, and responsible for the country’s ongoing political and economic crisis.
“We, as the young people of Zimbabwe, united in our diversity, strongly condemn the attempts by the corrupt regime of Mr. Mnangagwa and its allies to extend the illegitimate presidential term of office,” the Taskforce declared. They warned that extending his term would deepen the nation’s crisis of legitimacy, already fueled by disputed electoral outcomes and government failures in delivering basic services.
The statement directly accused Mnangagwa’s government of perpetuating rampant corruption, human rights abuses and systemic decay in essential sectors such as education and healthcare. “This is why the people of Zimbabwe wholly rejected Mnangagwa and his outfit (ZANU-PF) in August 2023 and confidently voted for President Chamisa with the intention to form a People’s Government, a desired government by all,” the group stated.
The Taskforce further criticized the regime for prioritizing personal power over the welfare of citizens, accusing it of plundering public resources, weakening institutions and presiding over a “dead economic system.” They vowed to resist any agenda seeking to prolong the suffering of Zimbabweans, warning that they would not “fold [their] hands when [their] future is at stake.”
In their rallying call, the youth movement urged progressive forces across the nation to unite against what they described as a “shameful agenda” and work collectively for “a new and great Zimbabwe for everyone.” Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, a rural teachers’ union is among several non governmental organizations that have also issued a warning statements against the move to change the constitution.
There is a growing call to resist the change of constitution to extend the current government by at least 4 years. This means that the elections scheduled for 2028 will be postponed.
