In a passionate plea to the government, a Pro-Chamisa Member of Parliament, Hon. Mutsa Murombedzi, who is a Propotional Representative MP for Mashonaland West, highlighted the severity of Zimbabwe’s food crisis and urged immediate action to address the pressing issue. In a conversation she had with Change Radio, citing reports from the World Food Program and experts, Hon. Murombedzi expressed grave concern over the plight of over 5 million Zimbabweans who are currently food insecure due to the El Niño-induced drought.
Speaking on the devastating impact of the drought, Hon. Murombedzi lamented the complete destruction of crops in the fields, leaving no hope for a harvest this season. Adding to the crisis is the free-falling local currency, which has driven food prices beyond the reach of many citizens, exacerbating their already dire situation.
Calling upon the government to declare the situation a national disaster, Hon. Murombedzi emphasized the need to activate disaster mitigatory mechanisms urgently. Stressing that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure the food security of every citizen and their access to clean water, she asserted that no Zimbabwean should be denied these basic human rights.
Addressing past injustices, Hon. Murombedzi urged non-discrimination in the distribution of food aid, emphasizing that aid must reach every citizen, irrespective of their political affiliation. She vehemently opposed any form of discrimination, particularly against opposition activists, in accessing food aid.
Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of prioritizing women and girls in disaster relief efforts, recognizing the gendered impacts that such crises often entail.
As Zimbabwe grapples with one of its most severe food crises in recent years, Hon. Mutsa Murombedzi’s impassioned plea serves as a stark reminder of the urgent action needed to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in the country.
