In a shocking incident that has left the community heartbroken, the tombstone of the late great Tonderai Ndira, a prominent Zimbabwean activist and member of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), was stolen last night, on the 12th of June 2023 at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare The theft of Ndira’s tombstone has sparked outrage and disbelief among those who hold his memory dear.
Tonderai Ndira, born in 1975, dedicated his life to advocating for human rights and democracy in Zimbabwe. As an influential youth activist, he tirelessly traveled the country conducting workshops and educating people about their rights. Ndira’s bravery and unwavering commitment to justice earned him the admiration of many, with some likening him to Zimbabwe’s own Steve Biko.
Throughout his activism, Ndira faced numerous challenges and was arrested on multiple occasions, demonstrating his unwavering resolve to fight for what he believed in.
Tragically, Ndira’s life was cut short in May 2008, during a period of intense political campaigning ahead of the presidential election. He was abducted from his home by armed men, and his lifeless body was discovered later that month. The gruesome nature of his death sent shockwaves throughout the nation, as it was revealed that he had been shot in the heart, stabbed multiple times, had his eyes gouged out, tongue severed, and his neck, skull, jaw, and knuckles broken. .”
Ndira’s fate was not an isolated incident but rather a harrowing example of the atrocities committed against opposition supporters in Zimbabwe during that period.
