Well-being in Zimbabwe In a recent development, the ongoing dispute between workers and Anjin Investments, a diamond mining company in Zimbabwe, has sparked calls for foreign companies to uphold labour laws and respect workers’ rights in the country. Peter Mutasa, Chairperson of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) and former President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), has urged foreign companies to prioritize the well-being of their workers and comply with the nation’s labor regulations.
Workers at Anjin Investments have voiced their dissatisfaction with low salaries and poor working conditions. They have raised concerns about safety hazards, inadequate facilities, and the lack of protective clothing. Justice Chinhema, Secretary of the Zimbabwe Diamonds and Allied Minerals Workers Union, outlined the workers’ demands, which include improved working conditions, access to better facilities such as clean ablution facilities, and adequate protective clothing for working in dusty conditions. In response to the workers’ grievances, Anjin Investments threatened to dismiss employees who participated in the strike.
However, the workers remained steadfast in their demands, insisting they would not report for duty until their concerns were addressed. Peter Mutasa has called for foreign companies operating in Zimbabwe to respect workers’ rights and adhere to labour laws. He has urged these companies to prioritize the well-being of their employees and treat them fairly. Mutasa highlighted the vital role that workers play in the success of any company and stressed the importance of protecting their rights.
