The deeply divided Zanu PF party has attempted to curb the party squabbles that have been plaguing them by banning several WhatsApp groups in Masvingo province. The party believes that these groups serve no purpose other than fueling factionalism between Mr. Mnangagwa and his deputy , Constantine Chiwenga. The decision was made after party leadership realized that members were creating WhatsApp groups to insult one another in a haphazard manner. Some of these groups are exacerbating factionalism, deepening divisions, and ultimately weakening the party. The party is said to working to bring order to its ranks in anticipation of an imminent Bhora Musango during the General elections targeted for August this year.
Bhora Musango strategy involves party members voting for the opposition or spoiling their votes in protest, particularly by those who feel they were treated unfairly in the primary elections. Some candidates who initially won the polls were later disqualified for various reasons. In other cases, cell registers were found to be in disarray, leading to the defeat of aspiring candidates.
Factionalism in the province has divided the party into two factions. Provincial Chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa is aligned with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, while former chair and current Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira, leads the faction aligned with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
