The European Union (EU) has commenced its observer mission in Zimbabwe ahead of the upcoming elections on 23 August. Chief Observer Fabio Massimo Castaldo, speaking at a news conference in Harare, emphasized the mission’s commitment to impartiality and non-interference. He stated, “We will observe and analyze the elections, and our tested methodology ensures that there won’t be any interference from our side.”
The EU observers will closely monitor various aspects of the electoral process, including ensuring a level playing field for all candidates and parties, assessing the electoral administration’s efficiency, evaluating the campaign environment, scrutinizing the conduct of traditional and social media, observing the voting process, and monitoring the accurate counting and tabulation of results. On election day, more than 150 observers will be present across the country to ensure transparency and fairness.
Furthermore, following the polls, a significant number of election observers will remain in Zimbabwe to observe the post-election climate. This continued presence shows commitment to monitoring the broader political landscape beyond the voting process, highlighting thier dedication to upholding democratic principles and facilitating a peaceful and inclusive transition.
The EU’s observer mission aims to provide an independent assessment of the electoral process in Zimbabwe and contribute to promoting transparency, integrity, and credibility in the democratic proceedings.
